Swimming in God
I spent the morning pulling weeds from the flower beds of an empty house. EMPTY.
Last night the movers packed up my pots and pillows and paintings, every last item crammed onto a big green truck headed for Texas.
Everybody I see lately asks me if I’m stressed out. But I’m not. Not at all. I have the most beautiful peace. My mind is completely still. That’s partly because the...
Look Out John Maxwell, Here Comes Dora
Dora is one on-the-ball leader. Seriously. Justin and I were talking leadership strategy recently, and we couldn’t help but notice what a good model Dora is.
First of all, she generates buy-in by effectively communicating the importance of solving a problem. Sometimes I can’t calm London down at the beginning of an episode because she’s saying “Oh no! Oh no! Oh...
"Groans that Words Cannot Express"
Last night, at a babysitter’s house, London opened the fridge and picked out what she’d like for dinner. When it came time to put her to bed, she insisted that the pants at the end of the bed be removed. She also insisted that the bathroom light be left on, not the light on the bedside table.
London’s tastes are very particular. She knows exactly what she likes. And what she...
Prophecy Fulfillment: It's Beautiful
In the adult Wednesday night Bible class at Henderson this week we talked about prophecy fulfillment, a topic with a high snooze probability. It wasn’t boring at all though. It was exciting even.
Dr. Clyde Woods went through four different prophecy fulfillments in the book of Matthew, each with an explicit “fulfilled” stamp from the author (and thus the Holy Spirit).
The first...
Ode to Fanny Price--the most boring heroine ever...
Ben Rector has this song about how hard it is to stand still when “the whole world’s moving backwards.” Makes me wonder if he’s read Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park.
I can’t remember the last time I read a good book in which the main character stayed exactly, precisely the same from beginning to end. I even tell my comp II kids that you can find the hero if you...
Pressed In
A few weeks ago Jim Gardner taught about “the narrow way” in Bible class. He said lots of interesting stuff, but I don’t remember it. I do remember this: The word we translate “narrow” literally means “pressed in.” Once he said that I was completely distracted by the image of it.
I saw packed elevators, crammed subway cars, lines outside concert venues...
To Walk is To Fall
Eve is walking right now. And that means Eve is falling right now.
She has a big bluish, purplish bruise on the right corner of her forehead. Her bottom would be black if she didn’t wear a diaper.I remember London during this time—always dirty. Always with a bruise on her head.
I honestly can’t believe Eve keeps getting up. I think I’d have thrown in the towel at fall...
