#peoplearemeanontwitter #benice

So, apparently Kim Kardashian got a divorce. I found out on Twitter from hundreds of people tweeting jokes and insults hashtagged #thingslongerthankimsmarriage.

I do not like to call people out in blog posts, but today I will make an exception:

I don’t think that was nice.

Making fun of the end of a marriage is a less than loving way to behave—even, perhaps especially, if you don’t know the people involved, and even if they do seem to enjoy the press.

And, while I’m getting preachy, I may as well encourage you to refrain from criticizing all those around you, the people who are not on Twitter to defend themselves and the easy targets. Tweeting about your teachers, for example, or the person in line behind you at the grocery store seems an especially cowardly way of insulting someone.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

I would suggest we talk (and tweet) in a way that builds up and gives grace.

Just sayin’
