I saw this portrait tonight (click the link to see the series) and thought about David being “knit together in [his] mother’s womb.”

This method of portraiture—embroidery, hand-sewing threads into single, unexpected combinations, finding just the right shade of blue in a merger of three—is the way I imagine God mapping out our us-ness.

The second picture above is the back of the work. I showed Justin and he said, “That’s us now.” This is the self we see when we look in the mirror.

The product, the perfect portrait, is what we’ll see later. It’s the glory self, the self that makes sense of all of the mysteries, all the unexplained coincidences, the loose threads.

But now, now we mostly see the threads.

About

Avatar My name’s Jennifer Gerhardt.
I’m a speaker, writer, and stay-at-home mom.
I like my husband. A lot.
I kill spiders for two arachnophobic toddler girls.
I drink chai tea lattes—Holy Spirit in a cup.
I read like an alcoholic drinks.
I’m a Texan, but I’m not from around here.
I think everything is about God.
And I like that my initials make me think of this lady:
“But Jael… She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died.”

The proposal story, for Alix. For everyone else, this post contains gratuitous capitalization and sappy-ness. Read at your own risk.
